A pole barn eave is a long, straight, unforgiving line. It is usually under a steel roof that sheds snow and ice in sheets, and there is often nothing between the gutter and the weather for a quarter mile. Aluminum on that eave works until the first bad winter. Steel is heavier gauge and much stiffer, so it holds its line over a long run and takes a hit from sliding ice without folding.

Steel comes galvanized, or painted in the same colours as the steel siding and roofing it goes on, so the gutter matches the building. K-style in 5″ and 6″ covers most barns and shops; box gutter covers commercial roofs and the buildings that want a squared-off line.
